Welcome to the official Spike Pikesite Home to the debut release T.O.T.E.M.
A young Matthew Pike, known to his friends as Spike, set in his sites the aspiration of conceiving, executing and completing a solo rock album. The inspiration was the discovery and subsequent infatuation with the music of Queen. A good many seasons later this totem has finally come to be.
With the assistance of Nick Granville on guitar and Jacob Randall on the drums, this is essentially a 3 piece rock band foundation, over which Spike poetically lays out a finely balanced point of view, utilising an extremely versatile vocal range.
The album begins with Paradise, a bright sunny quasi-reggae song, it then veers into the heavy funk groove of Eureka that rises to fever pitch. The heart of the work is the sweet and subdued Labyrinth, that is followed up by the equally profound but more driven Revolution. The finale is the celebratory Freedom, with a stonking rock feel and a quirky surprise or two.
All in all, its 22 minutes of thrilling and engaging original music. Perhaps it would be better termed as an EP, but this playing is by no means extended. It is a concise and varied body of work, with a strong narrative tying it all together.
